On 3 Public Relations’ analysis of Florida’s August 14th primary election results from federal and state legislative races shows 11 races were decided in the primary. Those candidates, who are not facing any general election opposition, are elected. There are 21 additional candidates facing only write in opposition on the November 6th general election ballot. These candidates, combined with the 40 incumbents who did not receive any filed opposition during the June qualifying period, result in a total of 72 candidates all but guaranteed election to office.
In summary, about 38 percent of Florida’s 187 federal and state district contests have already been decided (27 Congressional, 40 State Senate and 120 State House seats). Taking into account the 72 candidates most assuredly elected (40 automatic winners through June qualifying, 11 outright August primary winners, and 21 candidates with write in only opposition in the November general) yields nearly 2 of 5 races already determined.
